Learn English quickly - we explain how it works

Learn English quickly: Our 7 tips

Use only useful words and phrases to help you learn English quickly

In other words, there is no need to learn words that you are not going to use (at least not right away).

Do you remember the Pareto principleThis principle generally explains that 80% of the results are achieved in 20% of the total time of a project. This can be applied to many areas, including languages. So, learn the keywords to “survive” and save time studying.

Just learning the useful vocabulary brings us to the topic of frequency listsWhat's this?  Vocabulary lists based on the frequency of use of the words in a language. Generally, they are arranged according to the subject area. In this  Wikipedia article you will find, for example, frequency lists (in other words,  lists of frequently used words ) for television, films, the family environment, poetry, or even for The Simpsons

By the way: depending on your learning goals, these lists are not always the same. Because the usefulness of a word for you is of course related to your learning objective.  So if you want to learn to speak English quickly so you can go on vacation to an English-speaking country, there is the tourism vocabulary listTo pass an exam, there is a technical vocabulary list. In order to talk to an Australian friend, you have the opportunity to learn a little “Aussie slang” ... The reasons for learning a language are many and therefore also the vocabulary lists. In order to find the list that suits you, I advise you to take a look at our phrasebook, which is divided into subject areas.

Practice with native speakers ... whatever your level!

Don't be afraid to jump into the deep end! Practicing a language is the best way to make rapid progress. “Yes, but how am I supposed to practice English in my room or in a small town where there aren't many English speakers,” you might object ...

There are many sites for language exchange such as ItalkiYou can use these portals to find language partners abroad and communicate with them via Skype or other chat sites. This is also called a language tandemThe best way to learn English quickly? Speaking to a native English speaker for about an hour a week (half an hour in their native language and half an hour in yours). You will see that it is really possible to learn to speak a foreign language quickly - without even setting foot in front of the door. In the following video I explain why you don't necessarily have to go abroad to learn a language:

And if you are afraid that you will not find the right words or that you will make mistakes: don't panic! Speaking a foreign language is like doing a sport (and everything else is the same as you know, but if you are more familiar with that experience the comparison might help you): practice will get you better.
And to get you off to a good start, here are our tips for a successful language exchange:

Correcting one's mistakes so as not to repeat them

An extremely helpful way to make progress is to use iTalki with MosaLingua apps.

One way to use MosaLingua to help you avoid making a mistake again is to use the distributed repetition system. Let me explain this in more detail: if you've had a text corrected by you, take a sentence with an error and then create a new card in the app with the correction. It can look like this:

  • 1st page: the sentence in German, for example:  “Maximum 10 articles or less”
  • 2nd page: the sentence in the language you are learning (with improvement): for example  “Maximum 10 items or ( NO less ) fewer”

You can also add an explanation in other fields on the card to help you memorize the ruleIn our case that would be “ it's fewer because you can count the items, when you can't count, you use less, ex. less milk ”. We took an English example, but of course, the logic is universally applicable to all languages.

Another way to use our apps can be to improve your writing skills by writing words. If you notice a spelling mistake or a native speaker (like your tandem partner) points out a certain mistake in a word, then you can search for the vocabulary in the MosaLingua App and add it to your study pile. If this word does not yet exist, you can create your own personal cardIn both cases, you have the option of typing the word in while you are writing. And this will help you memorize the spelling.

Use ALL idle times during the day to study

During a day there are certain idle runs. Would you like some examples? Standing in line at the checkout for shopping, on the subway, on the bus, on the tram, on the toilet (yes, remember that), while falling asleep in bed ...
The idea is, so much “dead Time ”to use as much as possible to improve his language skills. For example, you can listen to English radio,  watch video on YouTube on your smartphone, listen to a podcast (to find a suitable podcast, have a look at our list of the best podcasts to start with),or repeat your flashcards in the MosaLingua appAny so-called "lost time" can be used sensibly to immerse yourself in the English language (see also tip 7 on regular repetition).
